Module Content

1. Handling & Storage

Bundle-lift rebar with certified slings and tag-lines — never chains alone. Store on dunnage, not directly on the ground. Bar-list marked; keep exclusion zone during offloading. Manual handling: two-person lift over 25 kg, use trolleys where possible.

2. Cutting & Bending

Use guarded rebar shears and benders on a level, stable platform. Keep hands clear of the shear jaws — a foot-pedal cutter must have a two-handed control or shrouded pedal. Never cut heat-treated bars with grinders (fragmentation risk).

3. Impalement Prevention

All vertical protruding bars must be capped with impact-rated rebar caps (mushroom caps are NOT compliant on their own — use OSHA-style plate caps for fall exposure) or bent-over horizontally. Cap immediately as bars are placed, not at end of shift.

4. Working on Rebar Mats

Rebar mats are not a walking surface. Provide plywood walkboards or engineered rebar-mat covers. Working at height on slab edges requires guardrails, safety nets, or fall-arrest anchored to structure — NEVER to a rebar bar.

5. PPE

Cut-resistant gloves (Level 4 minimum), safety glasses, hard hat, steel-toe boots, high-vis, and hearing protection when using cutters/benders. Long sleeves to prevent rebar scratches (a leading source of tetanus / infection cases).

6. UAE Requirements

Dubai Municipality Code of Construction Safety and ADOSH-SF CoP 30 mandate rebar-cap installation, guarded machinery, and formal training records for steel fixers. Toolbox talk before every deck fix; refresh weekly.
